What the Insurance Co. Requires

"The fire suppressant system should be serviced on a semiannual basis by a qualified fire suppressant contractor.  A service tag indicating the last date of service should be mounted on the system."

Restaurants have to have their fire suppressant systems serviced by you in order to be insured.  Therefore you have customers that must use your service, creating instant demand for your business.  The above quote is from one of our clients from his insurance company stating what was required before they would insure him.

What the Fire Marshal saysNFPA 96

The restaurant's fire suppressant system has to be serviced every 6 months!

The National Fire Protection Code 96 (NFPA 96) Standard is what most counties, cities and states adopt as their fire code.

10.1.2*Cooking equipment that produces grease-laden vapors and that might be a source of ignition of grease in the hood, grease removal device, or duct shall be protected by fire-extinguishing equipment.

11.2.1*Maintenance of the fire-extinguishing systems and listed exhaust hoods containing a constant or fire-activated water system that is listed to extinguish a fire in the grease removal devices, hood exhaust plenums, and exhaust ducts shall be made by properly trained, qualified, and certified person(s) or company acceptable to the authority having jurisdiction at least every 6 months.

Local Market Analysis

Go ask the restaurants in your area what they are doing and how much they are paying to have it done!

Performing a Local Market Analysis will help you project the size of the fire suppressant market in your locality. Please look in your local yellow pages directory and add up the total number of restaurants, schools, nursing homes, or any other commercial cooking kitchen.  Next, select a few and visit them in person, asking to speak with the manager or owner of the restaurant.  Let them know that you are thinking of starting a fire suppressant servicing business, and that you would appreciate it if he or she would help you with your market analysis by answering four questions for you, and that it won't take long. Remember, at this time you are not trying to sell them on anything. You are simply gathering information. When you have gotten all the information, express your thanks and let the manager/owner know that when you complete your training, you will get back in touch with him or her, and for being so helpful, you will offer them a contract at a discount over their current rate. Now, here is your first customer!

You may use the average price of the restaurants you called, multiplied by the total number of restaurants in your area to get some idea of the potential income that you could generate in your own business.  Please remember that this is only an estimate and it is highly unlikely that you will ever get 100% of the restaurants in your area. A much more conservative and reasonable estimate would be 50%. Also, the average restaurant is serviced every 6 months, which will allow you to at least double your money calculated above.
